Learning how to write a bibliography is an essential skill. A bibliography is basically a collection of sources that you used to complete a project, paper, speech, or presentation. This includes magazines, newspapers, interviews, films, books, and other documents. Nothing should be overlooked.
Sadly, a lot of people neglect putting a bibliography together. They think that don’t need it. Well, a good rule of thumb should be – when in doubt, write the bibliography. That way you prevent yourself from getting into trouble.
Who Needs To Learn?
Anyone who writes, gives speeches, or does any amount of research needs to put together a bibliography. People may think that it is only a skill for students. Not true. Everyone needs to write one, especially if they write a lot of research papers and reports.
There are several situations where a bibliography is needed. Presentations. Speeches. Papers. Reports. These are just a few examples. Basically if you research, you should automatically be ready to write one.
A Good Way to Keep Track of Sources
A bibliography is a good way to keep track of sources. That is why it is a good idea to keep track of bibliography information right from the beginning of the research phase. That way, when you want to refer back to a source you have them organized and can find what you need quickly.
When it is time to put together the formal bibliography, you will be happy to have all of the information in one place. It saves time in the long run. You can also take it one step further and start a database to hold your notes and bibliography information. There are also software programs that can help you do this.
If You Don’t Have One – It’s Stealing
This is the most important reason why you’d want to have a bibliography. Basically, if you use information and research that someone else put together and never gave them credit, it’s considered stealing.
However, if you decide to use a quote or two from a source and document everything properly in the bibliography, then it is perfectly acceptable. If you use the quote without giving someone credit it’s considered plagiarism.
Plagiarism could be a serious offense. It is up to the author how far they want to take the legal action. But keep in mind that if you are accused of plagiarism in certain places you can either get fired or expelled.
Remember to keep track of your information and write the bibliography. That way, you will stay out of trouble.
