There are several programs available for your use in editing and restoring your digital pictures. You don't want to spend $600 on a program when a $100 program will do all you want. Here are the most popular image-editing programs available to you and a summary of their cost and capabilities:
- Adobe Photoshop - This photo-editing program is designed for the professional photographer. It is the best software available but it also carries a high price tag, costing upwards of $600. It is not designed for those who require less professional results in their photo editing and its program is not learned overnight but requires serious dedicated concentration in order to take full advantage of all of its features. It is available for both Mac's and PCs.
- Photoshop Elements - A great little brother to Adobe Photoshop. It will do just about anything that the amateur photographer wishes to do to their digital photos. This program is often included free of charge with many digital cameras and even at a cost of only $99, it is a great bargain and strongly recommended. It is also available for the Mac or PCs.
- Paint Shop Pro - This program is very similar to Photoshop Elements and costs about the same ($99). It will do just about anything required, such as, cropping, resizing.color and contrast adjustment, rotation, etc. It was designed with the amateur photographer in mind and is much easier to learn than Photoshop as far as I am concerned.
- Corel PhotoPaint - This program costs about the same as Adobe Photoshop and is designed to compete with it but it does not have the features that Photoshop has. It is included as part of the CorelDraw suite. A nice program but a little pricy for the amateur.
- Freeware and Shareware - These are designed for those who are satisfied with minor editing to their digital photos but are really not suitable for the serious photographer. However, they are great FREE tools that you can download and use to get the feel of photo editing before deciding which program you want to invest in when you progress with your photography work. Remember Shareware is not free and has to be paid for, usually after a trial period of thirty to sixty days.
