Grammar Practice

Do you live in area that is home to many Spanish speakers? Perhaps, you have employees that speak Spanish and you want to communicate more effectively with them. On the other hand, maybe you are taking a trip to Spain or Latin America, and you want to learn Spanish in order to be able to speak with the locals. We all have our reasons why we want to learn Spanish, but how we can to the level where we can speak it conversationally? Below are 5 tips to becoming fluent and speaking conversational Spanish.

  1. Get a good learn-at-home program or sign up with classes. Personally, I like the learn-at-home programs because I can learn on my time, at my pace, and they are generally cheaper. I have a few programs that I recommend on my website. Then again there are those that prefer to learn in a classroom environment. For these people, I recommend checking out your local community college. Some community colleges offer Spanish courses at a reasonable cost, however, if you are going to sign up for classes, I highly recommend trying to find an instructor that is from or has lived in a native Spanish speaking country.
  2. Start with trying to learn phrases. This is much easier than trying to do direct translation, and you will find that many things do not translate directly. Try to avoid translating in your head, because this will slow you down tremedously.
  3. Don’t stress the grammar. You will pick up the grammar in time, but you should avoid trying to learn every single little grammar rule. Just for your information, Spanish grammar varies somewhat from English grammar.
  4. Practice…Practice…Practice. It’s like the old saying goes "if you don’t use it, you loose it." Practice writing, reading, and speaking. Find someone to practice with. If you can, get someone that is bilingual to help you. Furthermore, put yourself into situations in which you have to speak Spanish, and do not be afraid to make mistakes. Remember mistakes are part of the learning process.
  5. Keep it Fun. If it is not fun, you will slowly or not all.
Learning a new language is difficult, but it is also a great accomplishment. If you stick too it, and the follow these tips, I am sure you will be speaking conversational Spanish in no time.

Good luck or buena suerte.
