Writing an ebook can position you as an expert in your field. But many people who could and should write an ebook never get it finished. Most of them have good intentions and even begin writing, but at some point they just quit writing and put it away for another day. That day never comes. This does not have to be the case if you make an outline before you start writing and then stick to that outline until your book is finished.
An outline gives you a course of direction while you are writing. Therefore, you should spend time writing an outline that will serve you well during the writing process. Start out by writing down some goals and ideas that you want to include in your ebook. Write them down as you think of them. Perhaps you are going to teach someone about how to stay on a diet successfully. One of your goals may be to tell them which foods to eat during their diet. You may also discuss the role exercise plays in losing weight and keeping it off. There may be personal stories you will share with the readers of your ebook. Write all of these things down.
Next, choose the broadest topics that you will be writing about in your ebook from the list you have made. Look for eight to ten good ones that are directly related to your topic. These will be your chapters. List each chapter heading and make notes under it for what you will discuss in that chapter. Some ideas may have to be combined together if you don't have enough information. Other ideas may have to be divided into two parts because you have too much information.
Then put these chapters into a logical order, from beginning to end. For example, if you are teaching people about dieting you would want to talk about healthy foods to eat, exercising, and staying motivated during a diet before you would talk about keeping the weight off for good. Similarly, you want your ebook to flow naturally from start to finish so that you will hold your reader's attention and interest.
Finally, you have your outline and are ready to begin writing. You can go back to any chapter at any time and add more information. If you stay focused on your writing and stick to your outline, your ebook will be finished sooner than you thought.
